Who wouldn’t want to have a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger? In terms of bodybuilding, he, at his peak, is the role model, the ideal towards which most other athletes strive. In fact, his body is so influential that his son has followed in his footsteps. Although just 17, Patrick Schwarzenegger was recently seen with his shirt off and his six pack and biceps were impressive for his age. However, according to the British newspaper, the Daily Mail:
The Governor of California’s son did not achieve his muscles through body-building like Arnold though. His strong, lean physique is the result of yoga, while Arnold famously bulked up through body building.
So is it possible to get a body likeSchwarzie and if so, does it take yoga, bodybuilding or both?
Understanding Arnold Schwarzenegger
The legend that is Arnold Schwarzenegger is noted in the Guinness World Book of Records as “the most perfectly developed man in the history of the world”. It was during the 1970s and 1980s that he won the Mr Universe and the Mr Olympia competitions (no less than six times!). His routine then is described by Aeris Lifestyle as:
all out maximum impact routines […] It involves heavy multi-set free weights to force the body into shape.
The routine means working out three days a week on the chest, back, legs, calves, forearms, abs, biceps, triceps and shoulders. On the other four days a week, the routine involves working the calves and forearms and the abs. Clearly, there is no time off, although you do have four days where you can spend less time working out. Naturally, diet is also a very important part of achieving that fantastic body. It is recommended to eat multiple small meals, instead of three large ones. Taking care of the body is of vital importance, which means that you should get at least eight hours of sleep each day as well. Other than that, sugar is a big no-no in the diet of someone who wants to look like Arnie. It is important to understand that achieving this body does not happen overnight. It is a true labor of love that includes complete lifestyle changes, a regimented diet and exercise plan and taking the right kinds of supplements at the right times.
The Mental Attitude
Another thing that is very important to understand is that having a body like Arnold means completely changing your life and your way of thinking. According to Ask Men,
When Arnold used to work out for competition, he would completely zone out and concentrate on the muscle and set at hand. This philosophy is at the core of his approach to life in general (and judging by his success, it must have worked). In a documentary, he explained that when he exercises his biceps, for example, he imagines them growing and growing, until they fill up the entire gym.
This shows the mental commitment that has to be made in order to achieve this sort of greatness too, and that is perhaps what Patrick is trying to achieve through yoga. Both father and son are known to meditate regularly to achieve that state of mind where everything else just ceases to exist. Through meditation and yoga, they are able to be in the place where they want to be, where they can focus on nothing else but the growth of their own bodies. A lot of people agree that the mind, body and spirit have to be able to work together in perfect harmony in order to achieve any true metamorphosis. It seems, therefore, that getting a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger does take both physical and mental discipline.
