How To Kick-Start A Damaged Metabolism

One of the most difficult challenges that people face in regards to their health is that of losing weight. There are so many different options to choose from that many people tend to move from one diet to the next without much thought as to how such extreme measures may be affecting their overall health. The cycle goes something like this, extreme diet – major caloric reduction, no energy to workout, metabolism rebels, you gain weight and the cycle repeats. If this habit repeats itself enough times you can do some major damage to your body’s metabolism that could cause you some serious problems in the future.

The question then becomes: once your metabolism has been damaged is there any way to repair it and get your body’s system back on the track it was meant to be on? According to weight loss expert Jillian Michaels,

You can speed up your metabolism with time, consistency, and patience. After experiencing a variety of diets, you must allow your body to gradually adapt to a new metabolic set point.

With just a few simple adjustments you’ll be able to restore your body’s metabolism to its most natural state.

The Power Plate

Your eating habits have to go through an adjustment so that your metabolism knows how to restore itself. Chronic dieters change their eating practices often; sometimes their diet is extremely restrictive where they only consume 4-500 calories each day while sometimes in between diets they could be consuming thousands of calories each day. With those types of eating habits it could be very hard for your body to know what to do. This may force it to go into starvation mode and get stuck there.

In order to get your body back on track you need to change your regular eating habits. Start with what is called the “Power 3 Plate.” Rather than having a large meal a couple of times each day substitute for smaller, more frequent means throughout the day. Your Power 3 Plate should have three separate sections: one for protein, one for your carbs, and a larger one for vegetables. Eating a plate like this one every three hours will get your body used to a more consistent way of eating and each time you sit down with your power plate you give your body a chance to boost your metabolic rate.

Boost Your Thyroid

One way your body’s metabolism can be affected is if your thyroid is off kilter. Your thyroid releases essential hormones that control your body’s temperature and dictates how your body burns calories. When it is functioning at its best, your metabolism will work fast. However, with yo-yo dieters, it can slow down to nearly a dead stop. The best way to deal with this issue is not so much how much you eat but what you eat. A diet that is rich in grains, root veggies, and legumes can do wonders for an energetic boost to your metabolism. According to Abigale Miller of Everyday Health,

Properly combine protein, carbohydrates, and fat to achieve a balanced energy intake. In general, a healthy diet includes a mix of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and some protein, but each person has individual needs based on age, sex, physical activity level, body size and stress factors.

The more balanced you are in the foods you eat and the more natural your dietary choices are the quicker you can get your metabolism back on track.

Account for Age

While no one wants to admit it, as you get older your metabolism will naturally slow down. This means that even if you have healthy eating habits your ability to maintain a healthy weight will become more complicated. Not only will this affect your weight but it can also have an impact on the level of energy that you can put out every day and it can even affect your mental clarity as you go about your daily routine.

When it comes to giving a booster shot to your metabolism that has been affected by age you need to think more about how you want to feel and eat accordingly. Each person has his own biochemical combination so you will need do some investigation and find out what your trigger foods are. Some feel a boost of energy after eating fruits while others may need grains to get their engines revved up. Keeping a food journal every day and marking down how you feel after you eat a particular type of foods can help you see what your body’s chemistry is demanding of you.

Eat the Right Amount

As you do your calculations for the right types of foods to balance your metabolism, you may also want to make sure that you don’t over or under do it. According to Ginny Figlar of Gaiam Life,

Nothing bogs down a fine-tuned, fat-burning machine more than over-or-under eating. Overeat and your system is burdened, bringing your energy level down. Under-eat and your body goes into conserve mode rather than burn mode.

Be Your Own Expert

Learning how to eat right for your metabolism requires a lot of careful thought. There are so many different mixed signals out there that a clear nutritional plan is not all it’s cracked up to be. Oftentimes, those foods that are promoted as healthy may contain many unhealthy ingredients and it has become quite difficult to know what a real portion size. When you’re dealing with a sluggish metabolism that is stuck in a slow gear you need to be more proactive in maintaining your diet. One way to do this is by visiting your own medical practitioner and finding out exactly what your body is crying out for. Once you’ve determined how to readjust your metabolism consider making a permanent life change. Rather than approach your new adjustments as you would another diet focus on changing your whole way of viewing things and soon you’ll see that you can reboot your system and get your body back on the right track.
